Ganesha`s Immersion Annoys his Mother
Lord Siva chopped Vinayak`s head and replaced it with Indra`s elephant head. Vinayak was a creation of Shakti (Parvati) without lord Shiva`s intervention. Since Vinayak was created by Shakti, hence no one was able to control or defeat him except lord Shiva. Once he was guarding his mother at her order, and he had defeated all Gana and gods who tried to fight with him. Lord Shiva has capability to control Shakti. That s why Shiva got into the matter, and in order to control petulant Vinayak, who ignored to recognize his father, and angered Shiva severed his head.
