On Ganesha Chaturathi, looking at the moon is considered inauspicious. Why is it so? According to a mythological legend. Once corpulent Ganesha was riding on his vehicle rat, it looked so funny for the moon and he laughed and mocked lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha did not like it at all, and out of distraught, he cursed the moon, also he instructed his devotees to not to look at the moon on Ganesha Chaturathi. Looking at the moon on that day would be the harbinger of the misfortune and doom. Since then, the tradition is there not to look at the moon on Ganesha Chaturathi.
All the mythological legends carry a good message. Here the curved trunk of Ganesha is the embodiment of space and rat is for time. And, all the creatures are bound by space and time. As a whole Ganesha represents wisdom. The moon symbolizes the mind. Laughing at Ganesha by the moon, means mocking and ignoring the wisdom by an ignorant mind. The mind without wisdom creates all the bondage and hence miseries in the life. Giving priority of an ignorant mind and ignoring the wisdom is the destruction of the human life. Through this legend, the message has been given to concentrate on wisdom, although it looks esoteric for others.
