Why did India remain a slave for so many years?

Since the inception of the civilization, India has always been a center of attraction for the foreign invaders, because of its richness and abundance. Persian, Greece, Arabs, Turk, Mongol, Portuguese, Dutch and French came with their own ambitions and motives. They invaded, looted, plundered, massacred, exploited and ruled over us the way they wanted. We fought, but something went wrong and this mighty country became the slave of the handful people of foreign invaders. The major reason was – we were divided into states and we did not have one constitution of this country which could connect and collide the forces of the isolated states which could stand and fight against the foreign forces.

The first person who understood the need for one constitution of this country was – the great Chanakya. According to him – the nation or kingdom must run through the power of the constitution, not through the power of the king or any individuals.

He challenged the ferocious Nanda dynasty and the Nanda dynasty was replaced with Maurya dynasty. Chandragupta Maurya became the first empire of the Maurya dynasty. After the death of Chandragupta Maurya, his son Bindusar became the empire of the Maurya dynasty. During his reign, Chanakya became a victim of the royal conspiracy and was exiled to a forest where he died. Along with him, a dream of getting one constitution for this country also died and buried.

Foreign invasions continued. The last ruler who ruled this country was British rule. They ruled over us for 200 years. We fought for our freedom and on 15 August 1947, we got the freedom from the clutches of the British Empire. We got the freedom to form our government and run this country. That was the WOW moment. Congratulations… and it is time for celebrations. But hold one moment…

According to Indian Independence Act 1947, India and Pakistan got the status of the independent dominion states, not the complete freedom.

That means – you can form your government, you can run your country, but you are not free to take your own decision without the consent of the representative of the British Crown. By that time, we did not have a constitution, and the constitution is the power of any country. According to the Government of India Act 1935, all the power was with the British Crown. They had the power to dismiss our government and start ruling once again. Without our own constitution, we were made a puppet of the power of the British Crown.

That`s why, Winston Churchill, who was the Prime Minister of England during world war 2, said – you got the freedom, but you are not going to sustain it. Your country will fall apart and eventually, you will come back to us and beg us to rule over your country once again.

No doubt. Making the constitution of this country was a huge challenge, because of its diversity. India is the largest diversified country in this world. That challenge was given to Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. He was appointed the chairman of the drafting committee of the constitution. They took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to complete the constitution. It was accepted and adopted by constituent assembly on 26 November 1949 and after two months, it was implemented on 26 Jan 1950 and Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first president of the Republic country. We got the power of the constitution. Under the article 395 of the constitution, we abrogated all the laws imposed on us by British rule. Now India has become Sovereign, Democratic and Republic country. We got a complete freedom, the Purna Swarajya.
