Lord Shiva, the Power House and Chandra, the Reflected Light

Chandra, the moon, had 27 wives. These 27 wives of Chandra were the daughters of King Daksh. These 27 wives are known as Nakshatra. Rohini, one of his wives, was beloved to Chandra. He used to spend all of his time with Rohini only. Rest of his wives demanded the share of their time, but Chandra was not engrossed in anyone but Rohini. These 26 wives of Chandra complained to their father, king Daksh, about the conduct of Chandra towards them. King Daksh tried to make Chandra understand the Dharma, the duty, towards the rest of his wives as well. He recommended him to spend equivalent time with all of his wives. Despite the implication, Chandra was enamored towards Rohini only. Over again, they complained to their father, and at this time, King Daksh imprecated Chandra to lose his brightness and beauty, on which he was proud of.
Due to this cuss, Chandra started waning night by night. In desperation, he met Lord Brahma, the creator. Lord Brahma directed him to lord Shiva, signifying that lord Shiva can only do something in this episode. It indicates that lord Shiva has the ultimate power over the existence and no one else.
Chandra established Shiva phallus (linga) and performed unprecedented penance. Pleased with his deify, lord Shiva appeared before him to know the motive of his deify. Chandra narrated everything to lord Shiva that had happened to him. Lord Shiva told him that He could not obliterate the curse completely, but can moderate its consequence and can do some work around.
Lord Shiva has three eyes. He can incinerate everything into ashes with no time with His third eye.  Generally, he uses His third eye to incinerate the vices, and whenever someone tries to forcefully disturb his meditation. It reinforces that lord Shiva is the power house. Lord Shiva suggested Chandra to sit on His head to get his vividness and energy re-invigorated. On new moon night, the moon is absent from the sky. At that night, Chandra sits on the head of lord Shiva to get his brightness and energy generated. Since then Chandra wanes and waxes fortnightly. When Chandra approaches Rohini, he waxes night by night, and wanes, when he goes away from Rohini to other wives. Chandra does not have his own light; he got the reflected light from lord Shiva. Science has also proved the same thing that moon does not have his own light, he has the reflected light, which he gets from the Sun. According to one of the legends in Shiva Purana; out of jolly, Parvati closed the eyes of lord Shiva with her hands, and the entire universe sunk into darkness. It is the clear indication about the source of all the light.
In the primordial, there were no difference between spirituality and science, both were one subject. From the above mythological legend, we get both spiritual and scientific aspect.  The sages of yore tried to make us understand about the nature of light of the moon, and analogously teach the lesson of the life. Chandra had become arrogant and deviated from the Dharma, the real duty, and he lost his brightness on which he was proud of. Lord Shiva, The God, energized him to regain his brightness. This story of Chandra is the metaphor to our life, that we should not be unnecessarily proud of and arrogant which is not ours. What we have got is the reflected one, it is destined to decease. The waning and waxing of the moon shows the vicissitude of our life. The vicissitude of life is the stark reality. We cannot change it, but we can enjoy in zenith without being arrogant, and can learn in nadir without being dishearten.
