Draupati and Her Five Husbands, A Symbolism

Draupati had five husbands, the five Pandavas. All five Pandavas had unrivalled prowess in their respective fields. Once Draupati had asked lord Shiva a boon to get a husband to have all five qualities what Pandavas were possessing. It was not possible for one person to have all these five distinct qualities at the same time. It happened to Draupati to get five Pandavas as her husbands to sooth her boon. She kept herself busy to serve and satisfy her five husbands. One day, while playing a gamble with his cousin Kauravas, Yudhishtir, elder brother of Pandavas, gambled away his entire kingdom along with his common wife, Draupati, even without consulting her. All Pandavas had their individual wives as well, but he did not gambled out his own wife, but common wife, Draupati. Dushashna, one of the Kauravas, dragged Draupati in the palace before the assembly, and started disrobing her to insult Pandavas. She begged for help from her husbands, but of no use. Ultimately, she remembered lord Krishna to help her, and lord Krishna helped her to save her prestige before the assembly.

Draupati`s Five husbands are the symbolism of our five senses viz. Touch, Taste, Smell, Hearing and Vision … Our senses are so impetus and strong that it can shake even the controlled and strongest person. Lord Krishna is the super consciousness, the supreme intelligence. No matter how much you foster your senses, it will not help you at the time of need, if your senses are not under your control. Intelligence should be fostered. Only intelligence helps us to come out from the trouble. Senses should be used to achieve our ultimate goal in our life by controlling those. Later, Draupati used her husbands to take her revenge by killing Kauravas. We should use and control the senses the way we want to foster our intelligence, not the other way round.
